From Raleigh, NC, 19-year-old Frances Eliza is a singer-songwriter and guitarist, currently studying voice at UNC Asheville (‘22) pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz and Contemporary Music. Although studying jazz voice now, she has previously studied classical voice with private instructors in Raleigh, NC, as well as with instructors at Brevard Summer Music Institute and Appalachian State University.
Frances has been performing solo since she was 13 years old, getting her start by performing at local fundraisers and open mics. Having performed for audiences up to 2,000 people, Frances performs unique sets of originals and covers reflecting her eclectic musical background. Her older sister, Eleanor Mehlenbacher (Duke ‘16) and her have been singing together since she was 4 years old, and the two of them have performed together at events like Raleigh’s March for Our Lives rally against gun violence and other local fundraisers. For the past year she has been playing at local breweries and coffee houses around the Asheville area, playing a range of new originals and covers.
Frances blends her love of songwriting with her passion for jazz, classical, bluegrass, and folk music. She takes inspiration from various musical artists such as Amy Winehouse, First Aid Kit, Alice Phoebe Lou, Punch Brothers and Gregory Alan Isakov. Frances has been featured at numerous events, just a few being Raleigh’s SparkCon, the Raleigh March for Our Lives rally and WhyWakeWalks, Imurj’s Artist Spotlight series, Asheville’s Echo Fest, First Night Raleigh Rising Artist Showcase, and many more events. Frances just finished up a mini tour with the band Secret Pool, playing at venues across N.C., some of which included Static Age Records (AVL), Local 506 (Ch. Hill), and The Pour House (Raleigh).
